THE NEW JOE’S OF DON PEP

The flagship “Joe’s” once stood in the centre of Plaza Gomila and Palma’s nightlife, manned with wise glamour by the last barman of the 1950's, Jose del Río, better known as “Don Pep”, the king of Dry Martini’s and Frozen Daiquiris. Jimi Hendrix, John Lennon, Los Valldemossa, Ray Charles, Kevin Ayers, The Animals, Paloma San Basilio, Wilson Pickket, Eroll Flynn, Gertrude Stein, The Shadows, Pétula Clark, Torrebruno or Marlene Detrich would drop in for their last but one drink.

Epic times have taken place in this square. Kings, princes, nobles and ‘beautiful people’ rubbed shoulders in a frenzied parade of glamour. There were clubs, bars, shows, discos....

Andrés Ferret, who was a “gomilero” for three decades once said: “Sitting in Plaza Gomila when night falls is like hiring an easy chair in the best of theatres”.

And the new Joe’s Gomila Bistro Bar rebuilds this spirit, in which people fought over easy chairs to sit and experience the best of shows.
